  1. 1889-1976. German philosopher. In Being and
  2. Time 1927, he used the methods of Husserl's
  3. phenomenology to explore the structures of
  4. human existence. His later writings meditated
  5. on the fate of a world dominated by science
  6. and technology. He believed that Western
  7. philosophy had `forgotten' the fundamental
  8. question of the `meaning of Being'. Although
  9. one of his major concerns was the angst of
  10. human existence, he denied that he was an
  11. existentialist. His support for Nazism and
  12. his unwillingness or inability to defend his
  13. position damaged his reputation.
