1889-1976. German philosopher. In Being and
Time 1927, he used the methods of Husserl's
phenomenology to explore the structures of
human existence. His later writings meditated
on the fate of a world dominated by science
and technology. He believed that Western
philosophy had `forgotten' the fundamental
question of the `meaning of Being'. Although
one of his major concerns was the angst of
human existence, he denied that he was an
existentialist. His support for Nazism and
his unwillingness or inability to defend his
position damaged his reputation.
